Febuary 2008 Newsletter vol 1:
Communication systems may go through more significant changes in the next couple of years, than in the last five. These changes will be the result of a quiet ongoing revolutionary solution, Asterisk®, which has been advancing over the last nine years. It is revolutionary because it is an open source PBX software that is available to anyone. And it comes with the open source community behind it, advancing applications which can be easily integrated becoming part of its robust feature set, writing and adjusting code that always keep it up to date, publishing information for its users. (This community has already acted on other open source applications, like Apache web servers which handle most of our surfing, and we all know how that has revolutionized accessibility to the Internet.)

No longer will customers be limited to only a choice of vendor specific, software proprietary PBXs. Now businesses can purchase systems based on Asterisk® and gain the benefits that will come along with this choice. These benefits will include numerous feature sets, like voicemail to email, conferencing, auto-attendants, music-on-hold and advanced call forwarding features, which will allow the small office to have a big business phone system - the type of communications system that will make a big difference. It integrates to traditional PSTN lines, VoIP and other IP based systems. And the cost, it will be lower in the case of an Asterisk® based system, something that will make a difference the first day.
Life at the show; the Internet Telephony Conference and Expo:
What was the buzz? Well, we would be amiss if we didn't say "With
out a doubt - Asterisk®, IP-trunking and the
IP-PBX revolution." This coming right on the heels of InfoWorld's
January 8th award for outstanding best and most innovative products, one of
which was Asterisk®, the most widely used open
source telephony software, with more than a million downloads in 2007 and more
than 100 million users worldwide. InfoWorld pointed out that Asterisk®
is "a complete IP-PBX...providing considerable cost savings when compared
with commercial alternatives..". And being an open source software has
configurations built in which allows use of many different IP phones, unlike
more traditional PBXs where only particular specific phone models from the same
vendor will work. It all boils down to a great IP-PBX software with
numerous features; Asterisk®, a well tested, highly
stable standard that will change the telecom world and bring customers a
business phone system that will truly be impressive.
In visiting the show we were also impressed by the "best of breed" vendors,
supplying the hardware cards that connect the IP world with the connections that
you may already have in place. And the IP-phone companies. These
vendors are making equipment that is stable, gets the job done and integrates
with the software which drives the features-Asterisk®.
Maybe the last nine years haven't really been that quiet, they have actually
been purposeful and active, defining the point at which we are at today.
